Electives Overview
ELECTIVE WINDOW OPENS ______
ALL LINKS will NOT work until after ______
Important Dates:
- __________: All APPLICATIONS for electives are DUE
- __________: Elective Choice Form DUE
- Any students who complete the Elective Choice Form after ______ will have their elective chosen for them.
Elective classes provide Stacey scholars with enrichment opportunities that go beyond the core academic curriculum. Stacey Middle School provides a variety of popular choices for elective classes. We will try our best to place you in your most preferred elective choice. Students will find out their elective in late August at registration. We give priority to 8th graders, then 7th graders, and then 6th graders.
If you don't get into your top preference, it is because:
1) The elective is no longer being offered
2) The class is full (we give priority to 8th graders and then 7th graders)
3) Scheduling constraints make it not possible
4) The elective required an application and you didn’t submit one or were not selected
5) You did not complete the Elective Choice Form by the due date
Students may not change their elective so please choose wisely. Once students are placed in an elective, they must remain in it for the entire year. We do not take elective change requests. There is always a possibility that an elective offering will be added or removed. When this happens, it's beyond our control. We try our best to place students in their preferred elective.
Some electives require an application and/or interview. All Electives that require applications are due ______. For any elective that requires an application, do NOT select it if you have not submitted your application on-time. No late applications accepted. Please read the elective descriptions to make sure you meet their requirements.
We offer the choice of yearlong electives and a trimester elective rotation:
Elective Trimester Rotation: These electives are on a rotation so that you have a different elective each trimester. They are introductory courses that allow you to get a sample of various subjects. There are different Elective Rotations for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Students may not choose which elective they complete which trimester.
Yearlong Electives: These electives are for the entire school year. These classes allow you to dive deep into the subject. Some yearlong electives are offered to all grade levels and some are offered to only certain grade levels. Some yearlong electives require an application, have interviews, and/or have prerequisites. Please read the course descriptions carefully. No late applications will be accepted. You may apply to more than one yearlong elective, and you will indicate your preference when you complete the Elective Choice Form.
Zero Period: We may be offering a zero period class for 7th and 8th graders. The zero period class may be PE. Zero period is from 7:30 - 8:10am. When students take a zero period class, they will have two electives. Seating is limited so not all students who request zero period will receive it. Dual Language program and 8th grade students will have priority. You will find out if you have a zero period class at registration in late August. If you are interested in a zero period class, then please select that option when you complete the Elective Choice Form.

Band/Guitar Ensemble/Music
Stacey's instrumental music program enriches the lives of students by helping them acquire many positive attributes and skills. Students develop lifelong traits such as perseverance, teamwork, and self expression. Additionally, studies have shown that students who participate in music programs have higher scores on standardized tests in reading and math than students who do not take instrumental music.
Details about our Music Program:
-
6th, 7th, and 8th grade yearlong elective
-
All abilities levels are welcome and appreciated
-
Instruments offered for instruction: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and French horn
-
Percussion instruments are taught to students only after they learn a wind instrument and are selected by the band teacher.
-
School will provide students with an instrument; however, students may choose to buy or rent their own instrument.
-
Students with no experience are placed in a beginning band (instruments and books supplied)
-
Students who previously took band are placed in one of the advanced ensembles such as chamber winds, symphonic band, or zero period’s advanced wind ensemble.
Fun Facts about our Music Program:
- Students enjoy our music program. In fact, 95% of our students who start music will continue it for the remainder of their time at Stacey.
- Our band program has won awards that no other schools, who participated in the festivals, have ever attained in a performance setting.
- In the 2019 -2020 school year, there were 33 students who had brothers and sisters who previously participated in Stacey's band program. Our families find music is important and rewarding and want their family members to have the same experience.
- When most music programs enrollment goes down during the year, our enrollment goes up.
- Stacey regularly has around 700 family and community members attend our concerts to hear our students perform. Our community supports and appreciates the Stacy band program.
